Upcoming VR Project
Experience the fiery birth of a priceless tea bowl
Only a few hundred meters from our office, up on the hill across the road, an ancient kiln is presently being reconstructed. The builder, Sokei Aoyama, an experimental archaeologist, plans to finish his work by autumn this year. We are simultaneously building this kiln in Unreal Engine, to let people step inside the thousand centigrade inferno in VR. They will be the first to experience the fiery drama of creation of the tea bowls that were cherished by the samurai in mediaeval times. The bowls were made from the white clay that comes from the hills of our village, Onada, Japan, in the land that was once called Mino. They were the crown jewels of the Mino ware tradition. In order to realise the project, Mimir has applied for funding from the Epic Megagrant.
The Star of the Show
an Ancient Tea bowl
The tea bowls fired in these kilns included the shiro tenmoku, or white tenmoku. Only three originals have been preserved. Master potter Sokei Aoyama succeeded in reengineering the production method for the first time in five centuries. Now he is reengineering the kiln used to fire these priceless bowls. Mimir is proud to bring this work to the world through a VR experience, in which users transform into tiny avatars and step into the kiln. There, an old kiln worker will guide them, using his power over flame to tell the story of the creation of the most precious bowls in Japanese history. We hope this story will help people around the world discover the story of Mino ware, and direct attention to the ceramics industry in the region.

This shiro tenmoku (white tenmoku) tea bowl is a piece created by experimental archeologist and potter Sokei Aoyama from Tajimi, Japan. The shiro tenmoku were centre pieces in the tea ceremony in medieaval Japan. Only three - all national treasures - have survived to our times. This is a model of one of the first reconstructed in five centuries.
